What’s New This Year?

We are keeping most aspects of this event status quo for this year as it all worked well last year.

Please also note that this is a qualifying event for athletes to be selected for the next Special Olympics World Winter Games scheduled for January 6 through February 26, 2013 in Pyeong Chang, South Korea.  All gold medal winners from North Carolina will be entered into a random drawing for selection.  We do not yet know how many athletes from North Carolina will be able to attend or if we will be sending figure or speed skaters.

Due to this being a qualifying year for World Games, speed skaters will have three races.

  • In designing uniforms, please remember that Special Olympics Incorporated has strict guidelines on the use of the Special Olympics logo.  If you need a copy of these guidelines or your local program logo, call your area director.  As stated in the Special Olympics Inc. policies, no athlete or coach will be allowed to march in the Opening Ceremonies of any official Games if he or she is wearing a uniform bearing a corporate or organizational logo other than Special Olympics.  Any person that does not follow this policy will not be permitted to  sit with the official delegations.

  • Each delegation will be recognized where they are seated and will be asked to stand for acknowledgement.
  • Give the crowd lots of waves and smiles!

A dinner will be served after Opening Ceremonies and the dance will immediately follow 7:00-8:30pm.  Athletes may also have the option to go to Extreme Ice Center for free skate on Friday evening.
