Special Olympics North Carolina offers a variety of internship opportunities for students who are interested in enhancing their academic experience with real-world experience in their field. Our goal is to cultivate a mutually beneficial relationship between the intern and Special Olympics North Carolina. While the intern provides his or her supervisor with professional and efficient support, the supervisor will educate the intern on the specific components of non-profit management and give him or her hands-on experience.
Numerous interns are needed year round for internships with Special Olympics North Carolina throughout the state. We provide internship opportunities in volunteer management, sports, communications and development.
The scheduling of internship programs is determined by the supervisor and the intern. The time commitment ranges from 10-40 hours per week, depending on the needs of the intern and Special Olympics North Carolina.
Generally our internships follow the academic calendar. We have a fall, spring and summer internship program.
Compensation:
Internships at Special Olympics North Carolina are offered on a volunteer basis.

Title: Communications Intern
Reports To: Vice President of Communications
Key Accountabilities:
- Public Relations
- Publications
As a communications intern, you will gain experience in the following:
- Building relationships with the media
- Writing, editing, proofing
- Reporting/interviewing
- Desktop publishing
- Analytical thinking
- Working with various computer software packages (Microsoft Word, Publisher, PowerPoint, Access)
- Operating in a business environment
- Nonprofit management
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Keep current and accurate media database
- Maintain photo files
- Maintain statewide news clippings
- Write press releases as assigned
- Assemble press kits
- Attend state-level events and interact with the media as assigned
- Write articles for monthly and quarterly newsletters as assigned
- Write athlete and volunteer profiles/ Web spotlights
- Assist in implementation of national public education campaign as assigned
- Other duties as assigned by the vice president of communications
Work Schedule:
- Flexible hours
- Weekend hours may be necessary due to certain special events
Qualifications:
- Good oral and written communication skills
- Good organizational and analytical skills; attention to detail
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Good editing skills and knowledge of language, grammar, punctuation and style

Title: Development Intern
Reports To: Vice President of Donor Development
Key Accountabilities:
- Assist with general office management (i.e. typing, filing, copying, faxing)
- Assist with the research, planning, coordination and implementation of fund
raising events
- Assist the Development Director in implementing the fund raising plan for
Special Olympics North Carolina.
- Assist in the collection and analysis of data relating to fund raising for
Special Olympics North Carolina.
- Other duties as assigned by the VP of Donor Development.
Qualifications:
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- College degree emphasis in sports management, communications, non-profit
management or related degree.
- Must have a valid driver’s license.
- Attend work regularly as scheduled.
- Have the ability to attend Special Olympics event and related functions as
assigned.
- Represent the organization in a professional manner.
- Task oriented
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Good organizational and analytical skills
Computer Experience Requirements:
Experience with PC Microsoft Windows and
the software programs associated with Windows in particular but not limited
to Word, Excel, Access and Power Point.

Title: Sport Intern
Reports To: Senior Sport Director
Key Accountabilities:
- Assist with general office management (i.e. typing, filing, copying, faxing)
- Assist with the planning, coordination and implementation of state-level events (i.e. training schools, invitationals, qualifiers, Fall Games, Basketball Tournament, Summer Games)
- Assist the Sport Director in developing a comprehensive sport plan for Special Olympics North Carolina.
- Assist in the collection and analysis of data relating to sports for Special Olympics North Carolina.
- Other duties as assigned by the Sport Director.

- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- College degree emphasis in sport management.
