Athlete of the Month Sept. 2010- Pam Richards, Mecklenburg County

Congratulations Pam Richards of Mecklenburg County - SONC Athlete of the Month- Sept. 2010

Congratulations Pam Richards of Mecklenburg County for being named Special Olympics North Carolina Athlete of the Month for September 2010!  Pam has been involved with Special Olympics for five years. She competes in basketball, bocce, bowling and tennis!  Pam has shown great leadership skills through her volunteer work with the Mecklenburg County bocce program.  She has recruited new athletes to the sport and she helped run the bocce station at Camp SOAR, making bocce one of the most popular sports at the camp. 

The 52 year-old recently attended Central Piedmont Community College and was studying Human Services and Developmental Disabilities.  She is very active within her community.  She volunteers at Residential Support Services and is President of the Kiwanis Aktion Club.  She enjoys spending time with her husband of 16 years, Alan and their pets  CallieO the cat and Alexandrea the rabbit.                                                      

Most memorable SO moment:  Accepting a medal with team at the 2009 Bocce Tournament in Charlotte.

Hobbies:  Amateur radio (ham radio operator), internet junkie, reality TV, reading, fantasy sports (basketball, golf, football, soccer)

Favorite Color:  (2)Purple – “appeals to me. Would paint everything purple if I could”.  Blue – “because I like everything North Carolina”.              

Favorite Musician: Carmen – “because I love gospel music”.
