2007 Special Olympics North Carolina Global Messengers
"I’m ready to speak to the world!” announced Special Olympics Guilford/Greensboro athlete Bradley Rice. Seven Special Olympics North Carolina athletes became official spokespersons for the organization after completing the 2007 Special Olympics North Carolina (SONC) Sargent Shriver Global Messenger training Sept. 7-8 at the SONC headquarters in Morrisville, NC. Rice will tackle the city of Greensboro first, but who knows where his speeches will take him next!
The Global Messengers were trained in how write a speech, how to present a speech, facts about SONC and how to recruit athletes, donors and volunteers. The highlight of their weeked was delivering their speech on the final day of training.
Special Olympics World Games cyclist Kerry Hagner had plenty to say about all the things she’s accomplished in Special Olympics not to mention the things she’s ready to experience in China! Wake County athlete Theara Sanders’ personality came bursting out during her speech, engaging the audience very effectively and gathering tons of laughs! No one could believe it, but Rachael Teeples had never given a speech before – with her ease of delivery, everyone thought she was a pro!
Congratulations to the 2007 SONC Global Messengers class: Theara Sanders of Wake County, Jessica Blackmon of Columbus County, David Caldwell of Wilkes County, Kerry Hagner of Orange County, Bradley Rice of Guilford County, Rachael Teeples of Brunswick County and Lorne Jackson of Jackson County.
Athletes were nominated to attend the SONC Global Messenger Training by SONC local program coordinators. Global Messengers are available to make presentations about Special Olympics across the state. To schedule a Global Messenger for a speech, contact your local coordinator or Megan O’Donnell at 919-719-7662, ext. 106 or modonnell@sonc.net.
