North Carolina National Guard, SONC Fall Games Volunteers

“Beep, Beep, Beep” at 10:00 a.m. sharp on Tuesday, Nov. 7, two military humvees and a PLS flatbed military truck backed up to the outdoor storage entrance at the Special Olympics North Carolina headquarters. For the second straight year, the NC National Guard had arrived to help the Special Olympics North Carolina staff transport equipment to the 2007 SONC Fall Games in High Point.

The twelve NC National Guardsmen based out of Greensboro loaded up cases of water, boxes of T-shirts, awards stands, bocce court lumber and much, much more. When the vehicles were packed full, the Guardsmen headed to High Point. The equipment will get dropped off, sorted and then dispersed to the six different venues that will be used to host the Fall Games the weekend of Nov. 9-11.

The Guardsmen were upbeat and excited to volunteer at Fall Games. Some are just a year removed from duty in the Middle East and one just returned from Kuwait just two weeks ago. Three of twelve volunteered at the Fall Games in 2006 and were very impressed with athletes’ achievements. All of them are excited to see the athletes in action.

In addition to equipment transport, the Guardsmen will be building bocce courts, setting up tents, presenting awards and helping tear-down. Their presence is a huge help to the volunteer members of the Games Management Team, who is responsible for hosting the event.

“I am so thrilled the National Guard is back,” said Volunteer Games Director, Sherry Paul of High Point Parks and Rec. “We are so thankful for their support and assistance. I know the athletes are always impressed to see them in their fatigues and cheering for them on the sidelines too.”

THANK YOU to the North Carolina National Guard for your support at 2007 SONC Fall Games!
