National Games marked the first time in history Motor Activities
Training Program (MATP) athletes have been able to participate in team
sports. Through adaptive equipment, the athletes were able to play basketball,
soccer, tennis and more. Stacey Castelloe of the Caswell Center, won a
challenger medal after competition on Wednesday. He and his coach Jerry
Crisp played soccer for the first time ever. Stacey also had the opportunity
to showcase his singing talents. He opened MATP competition each morning
with a song. He closed the event with his rendition of 'That's What Friends
Are For.' In his own words, Stacey talks about playing soccer for the
first time, his coach Jerry Crisp and his experience at National Games
My team won our soccer game and I scored two goals. We were called the
Shining Stars. [Scoring] was just beginner's luck, but it felt good. Jerry
helps keep me focused during the game and tells me to concentrate and
do my best. I got a two certificates and a medal with my team.
I'm really enjoying Special Olympics and everybody is very friendly.
Of course, I'm the type of person where I like everyone! I'm glad Iowa
invited me to participate. I've met a lot of new friends and I want to
come back next year!
I like singing and it felt good to sing for my new friends. When I'm
learning a song I just keep practicing until I know it. Just like when
I keep practicing before a Special Olympics event. Yesterday morning Mrs.
Shriver heard me sing. I think she is a sweet and wonderful person.
