Choosing to volunteer your time as a Special Olympics coach will be one of the most rewarding decisions you will ever make! Special Olympics coaches have a unique opportunity to work with athletes in competitive situations and to assist in their training for life as well.

Special Olympics North Carolina is committed to providing coaches learning opportunities to train Special Olympics athletes in their sports. The quality of training and experiences provided by a Special Olympics coach directly correlates to an athlete's improvement.

The Special Olympics North Carolina Coaches Education System identifies basic standards and competencies necessary and essential for being a Special Olympics coach. The purpoe of coach certification is to ensure each coach has the knowledge and tools to train athletes according to sport, safety and Special Olympics guidelines.

Special Olympics North Carolina utilizes five coaching levels. Each level requires a certain number of components to be completed. Each level is listed below. A more detailed description of each level, how it will be implemented and enforced can be found in the Coaches Education Plan (pdf).

To become a certified Special Olympics coach:

  • Contact the coordinator for your Local Program to let him/her know which sport(s) you are interested in. There are 20 sports offered by Special Olympics North Carolina.
  • Complete and submit a Volunteer Screening Form. Special Olympics North Carolina is required to perform background checks on all coaches and volunteer leaders.
  • Complete a Coaching Registration Form so your interests and skills can be matched with coaching opportunities.
  • Complete the Special Olympics General Orientation and Protective Behaviors Courses or test out online (coming soon).
  • Attend a sanctioned SONC or ASEP Sports Skills course.
  • Complete a Principles of Coaching course or test out on-line (coming soon).
  • Complete and submit the Special Olympics Application for Sports Training Certification (pdf).
  • Complete a minimum of 10 hours in teaching and coaching Special Olympics athletes.
