Powerlifting became an official Special Olympics North Carolina (SONC) sport in 1990 at the Summer Games. Competitions such as the bench press, dead lift, and the squat event have been added since powerlifting’s addition to SONC.
Rules and Resources
Events OfferedPowerlifting includes three basic lifts: the squat, the bench press and the dead lift. Athletes are first classified by weight and then divided by ability. Men and women can participate in all powerlifting events. Single event competitions are the bench press, squat and dead lift. Athletes who are trained and competed in more than one event have the option of competing in a combination event. This combines lift totals from the bench press and dead lift for a combination total score or totals from the three lifts for a trible combination total score. Competition OpportunitiesDivisional qualifiers are designed to give athletes and coaches a competition experience similar to Summer Games while also ensure athletes are using proper techniques in their lifts. Qualifiers are also held in conjunction with coach training schools. SONC Summer Games is the state-level competition featuring six sports and takes place in Raleigh the first weekend in June. Southeast Regional Powerlifting is an additional competition opportunity for powerlifting athletes hosted by Special Olympics Georgia January 20-22, 2012. Delegation pre-registration form is now available and due to Andrea Stamm by November 6, 2011. Bar Bender Invitational is an additional competition opportunity for powerlifting athletes hosted by Special Olympics Virginia Area 26 in May. Details will be posted as they become available. |
