Jordan Roland, Special Olympics Lake Norman – November Athlete of the Month
November is the season of turkeys and giving thanks; a perfect time of the year to award Jordan Roland the Special Olympics North Carolina “Athlete of the Month”. The 19 year-old Special Olympics Lake Norman athlete loves turkeys. One of his hobbies is turkey calling. “I think they are funny animals,” said Roland. “They make some great noises. It’s fun to imitate them.”
Roland is also very thankful that Special Olympics is part of his life. He has been involved for 10 years and competes in aquatics, bowling and sailing. Yes, sailing! Roland loves the water and desperately wanted to become an avid sailor. His passion for the sport led to the creation of the Special Olympics Lake Norman Sailing Team with the support of the Lake Norman Yacht Club. Roland, his two teammates, their Unified Partners and two Special Olympics Wake County athletes all attended the 2010 Special Olympics Southeast Sailing Regatta in Georgia. It was a great experience and Roland won a bronze medal!
Roland loves his time on the water but has to carve out time for it. He works three jobs during the week. Roland works at Lineberger’s Cattle Company in Denver, and Papa’s Pizza and Food Lion in Troutman. He is a hard worker. In addition to Special Olympics, Roland also volunteers at the local library in Mooresville and occasionally for the Red Cross.
Congratulations Jordan Roland!
