About the Special Olympics NC Torch Run 5k
2012 will be the fourth edition of the Special Olympics NC Torch Run 5k.  Proceeds from this event benefit Special Olympics NC and the 38,000 individuals with intellectual disabilities that participate in the year-round sports programming offered at no cost.  This event is hosted by the NC State Police Department and is a major part of the department’s fundraising effort to benefit the North Carolina Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics each year.  In 2011, more than 700 runners participated in the 5k and helped to raise over $60,000 for Special Olympics NC.  Our goal for 2012 is to set a new record for runners and funds raised

The Special Olympics NC Torch Run 5k is also the third event in the ten-race Second Empire Spring 2012 Grand Prix Series. Runners who participate in these races accumulate points and are awarded money and prizes at an awards banquet held at the Second Empire Restaurant at the conclusion of the Series.

About the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics
The North Carolina Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics unites officers from law enforcement agencies and corrections departments across the state in an effort to raise funds and awareness for Special Olympics. Special Olympics is a year-round sports organization for children & adults with intellectual disabilities. We offer sports training and competition in 20 Olympic-type sports to more than 38,000 athletes across the state.  Athletes are never charged a fee to participate. As a 501(c)3 private non-profit, SONC relies on generous donations from individuals, businesses and civic organizations for funding.
